I’m sure you’ve noticed that after a GREAT workout, it feels like your body is not happy with you. You might even be wondering “What did I do wrong?” The fact is…You may not have done anything wrong. In fact, You may have done EVERYTHING right!
Let me explain…
Outside of injury, there are 2 reasons why our body gets sore after a workout.
The first is called Acute Muscle Soreness (AMS). AMS is the pain felt in muscles during and immediately following strenuous physical exercise, for up to 24 hours. This type of muscle soreness is caused by a build up of lactic acid in the muscles. (This is a good thing!)
The second is called Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS). DOMS is the pain and stiffness felt in the muscles from 24 hours up to 72 hours after exercise. This usually happens after you use your muscles in a way that they are unaccustomed to, or in strenuous exercise that exceeds the limits that your muscles are accustomed to. DOMS stems from microscopic tears in your muscle fibers and the surrounding connection tissues during exercise. This is not as bad as it sounds because our muscles get bigger and stronger from the process of rebuilding these tears. (This too is a good thing!)
Now even though the soreness that you experience is a good thing…it can be uncomfortable. Don’t worry, there are ways to alleviate the soreness and still reap the benefits of the workout you just put your muscles through.
